Mystic Potion Brewery
Overview#
Mystic Potion Brewery is an interactive potion crafting game that combines gaming with learning. Players answer coding questions to gather ingredients, then experiment with recipes to discover 15 unique potions. Built with Next.js 15, React 19, and Tailwind CSS 4, the project showcases modern web development practices with an immersive dark fantasy theme.
Key Features#
🧪 Potion Crafting System#
Players combine ingredients in a magical cauldron to discover potions. Each of the 15 recipes requires specific ingredients in exact amounts, encouraging experimentation and strategic thinking.
📚 Knowledge Quest (Quiz System)#
Answer coding questions across three difficulty levels to gather ingredients:
- Easy - HTML, CSS, JavaScript basics (3x common ingredients)
- Medium - React, TypeScript, Git (2x uncommon ingredients)
- Hard - Advanced concepts, algorithms (1x rare/legendary ingredient)
🎯 Discovery Mechanic#
- Start with only 1 known recipe
- Experiment to unlock 10 standard potions
- Find 5 hidden special potions through creative combinations
- Hints provided for undiscovered recipes

Challenges & Solutions#
Challenge: Engaging Learning Experience#
Solution: Gamified the learning process by tying coding knowledge directly to game progression. Players must answer questions correctly to gather ingredients, making education feel rewarding rather than tedious.
Challenge: Discovery Balance#
Solution: Implemented a hint system that provides just enough information to guide experimentation without spoiling the discovery experience. Players feel accomplished when finding recipes.
Challenge: State Persistence#
Solution: Used LocalStorage with proper error handling and fallbacks. State is automatically saved after each action, ensuring progress is never lost.
Challenge: Responsive Design#
Solution: Tailwind's responsive utilities made it straightforward to create a layout that works beautifully on both desktop and mobile devices.
Game Design#
